Mrs. Ray’s Cinnamon Coffeecake

This recipe came from a café ran by a Mrs. Ray. She served this daily in her café and gave my mom the recipe, probably 60 years ago.
Ingredients
  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • dash of salt
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
Topping for Cake:
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup chopped nuts

Instructions
Cake instructions:
  1. Grease a cake pan with Crisco shortening.
  2. Mix flour, sugar and cinnamon, baking powder, salt together.
  3. Cut in butter until thoroughly mixed, then add the milk and egg.
  4. Using a mixer, blend until smooth.
Topping Ingredients:
  1. Add all topping ingredients and mix together.
  2. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan, sprinkle half of the topping over the batter.
  3. Carefully add the remainder of the batter on top.
  4. Sprinkle the remainder of the topping ingredients over the batter.
  5. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven 30 minutes or until brown.
  6. Great served warm !
